The Dark Side of Omeprazole Drug
Anyone who has peptic ulcer problem or GERD symptom should probably use drugs like Omeprazole. Similar to other proton pump inhibitors (PPI), Omeprazole is also widely popular for its long lasting and quick reduction of gastric acid. Both capsule and tablet varieties are available. The oral preparation comes in four specific dosage forms – 10mg, 20mg, 40 mg, and very rarely 80mg. Suspension, powder and injectable forms are also easily obtainable.
The drug is often prescribed for short time duration. For duodenal ulcer, Omeprazole is indicated for four weeks, with one tablet daily. In severe cases of gastric ulcers, 40 mg is prescribed daily for around 8 weeks. Patients with GERD symptoms should consume 10-20mg tablet. In the case of Helicobacter pylori, this drug is prescribed along with antibiotics like amoxicillin or clarithromycin for duration of 7-14 days. Omeprazole is also effective in the treatment of reflux disease, dyspepsia, erosive oesophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and much more.
Fortunately, no serious Omeprazole side effects are common. Headache, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, hair loss, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and vomiting are fairly frequent. Some persons even experience sleep deprivation and trouble awakening. Though extremely rare, anxiety and depression may also occur. In paediatric patients, respiratory infection, bronchospasm, and fever are found to occur. If you use the drug for a prolonged period, then it can affect your bone strength. Omeprazole affects the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 and calcium carbonate – the two important minerals that are needed for the strength and development of bones.
Flatulence, over sweating, male breast enlargement, rashes, and joint pain are some of the infrequent side effects of Omeprazole. Rarely, idiosyncratic reactions like pancreatitis, erythema multiforme, interstitial nephritis, and Stevens Johnson syndrome may happen. The chance for pneumonia is also increased to 30%.
So it is always better to take the capsule or tablet as prescribed by the physician. These delayed release tablet should not be crushed or chewed, rather taken as a whole. For better results, the drug can be consumed along with other antacids. Avoid drinking and smoking during the course period to improve its effect.
Over medication can always cause adverse health issues. So change to a healthy lifestyle to avoid unnecessary drug usage. If you include alkaline food, eliminate bad habits, and perform regular exercises, then you can regulate the acid formation inside your stomach and balance the pH level. Thus, you can naturally treat acid reflux without using PPI medication like Omeprazole.
